Good Friday, volleyball fans.

Hard to believe but the regular season is almost behind us. There are a few matches that need to be completed with one more official date in the Lackawanna League to be played. Then the District 2 playoffs are set to begin next week.

Western Wayne completed its goal and captured the Lackawanna League title Thursday night. The Lady ‘Cats defeated Mountain View, 3-0, to move their record to 17-0 with a two-match lead over Blue Ridge with one to play. That locks things up for Western Wayne, which ends the streak of either Dunmore or Blue Ridge being the top team in the league. The overall Lackawanna League champion has been Dunmore (10) or Blue Ridge (2) every season since 2007, which was Dunmore’s first year as a competing varsity member.

THE QUEST

Western Wayne has been close on occasion, even handing the eventual league champion a loss in the regular season at times.

Since 2016 the Lady ‘Cats have made a slow climb to the top of the standings, winning double-digit matches in each of the previous three seasons and finishing second to Dunmore in 2018.

Western Wayne records since 2016
  • 2016: 12-6
  • 2017: 11-7
  • 2018: 15-3
  • 2019: 17-0

During this stretch, Western Wayne has been fueled by some outstanding players whose career numbers jump off the page. Rebecca Klemovitch, Sydney Krompasky, Sabrina Swoyer and Trina Barcarola, the team’s four seniors, have played a major part in the team winning 55 league matches and 71 overall.

WYOMING VALLEY CONFERENCE

(As of Oct. 18 on piaad2.org)

As you can see, the WVC has a logjam at the top of the standings. Tonight, Nanticoke plays at Holy Redeemer and that match will knock one of the three that are locked in a tie out of the mix.

North Pocono plays at Berwick on Monday in the other match that will factor in. There is certainly a high potential for a tie at the top. What happens at that point is going to be interesting because the calendar does get a bit tight next week with the postseason schedule looming.

Delaware Valley finishes its regular season Monday at home against MMI Prep.

TIMES-TRIBUNE TOP 5

In addition to winning the Lackawana League title last week, Western Wayne also claimed the Scranton Showdown championship with wins over MMI Prep (2-0), Abington Heights (2-0), Lake-Lehman (2-0), Wyalusing Valley (2-0), and Wyalusing Valley (2-1).

There was no movement among the ranked teams, however.

Delaware Valley has reeled off three straight wins in the WVC and has its win over Western Wayne. Blue Ridge gave Western Wayne a tough match last time out, Dunmore had its six-match winning streak halted by Blue Ridge on Thursday and Abington Heights won a pair of matches last week.
