HS VOLLEYBALL: Power teams off to fast starts; Western Wayne stands at No. 1

The girls volleyball season is off to a good start for the power programs.

With the Lackawanna League’s new two-division format it creates an additional opportunity to win a championship. It does, however, limit to one match only between some of the traditional favorites.

Western Wayne has already passed two early tests this season. The Lady ‘Cats opened the league schedule with a 3-2 win over Dunmore in a showdown between two of the best teams.

WESTERN WAYNE 3, DUNMORE 2

Kaeli Romanowski had 31 assists and nine digs to lead Western Wayne to a 3-2 win over Dunmore in a Lackawanna League girls volleyball match.
Skylar Long had 12 kills and five digs for the Lady Wildcats, Kathy Shepherd had 12 kills and four digs and Emily Romanowski had eight kills and seven digs.
Jaclyn Marichak had 18 digs and 17 points for Dunmore, Ana Pacewicz had
12 points, eight assists and eight digs, Sienna Delfino had eight digs and Maddie Lessard had four kills.

REMATCH: Sept. 30 – Western Wayne at Dunmore

 

Then, Western Wayne conquered Blue Ridge in a Division I-II crossover match where it dropped the first set.

WESTERN WAYNE 3, BLUE RIDGE 1

S. CANAAN TWP. – Western Wayne shook off a slow start and once in sync, rolled to a win.
Kathy Shepherd provided the punch and Kaeli Romanowski steadied the offense as the Lady ‘Cats posted a 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-12) win over Blue Ridge in a Lackawanna League Division I-II girls volleyball crossover match Wednesday evening.
It’s the second straight win for Western Wayne (2-0) against one of the top programs in the league. It opened with a five-set win over Dunmore last Saturday.
“We just needed to keep ourselves in the game and stay together,” said Shepherd, who led the Lady ‘Cats with 16 kills, 16 points and six digs. “We messed up some things early and we fixed them in the end. Overall, we played really well.”

REMATCH: There will not be one because of the new two-division format.

 

A very impressive start, indeed. However, the defending Lackawanna League champion North Pocono Lady Trojans are not going anywhere.

The Lady Trojans had a test against up-and-coming Mountain View on Monday. Still, North Pocono is also unbeaten after three league matches. It also has a non-league win over Pittston Area.

AHEAD: North Pocono travels to Western Wayne, tonight at 6 p.m.
