OK, we were able to muscle through the first and only full week of AROUND THE CAMPS.
Today, the KIA got me to Mid Valley just as the sun broke through the clouds, almost like coach Dave Rebar planned it that way. Then, we motored to Scranton Memorial Stadium’s practice field, to visit with West Scranton and coach Brian Fahey.
Onward. …
DAY 4 MILES: 22
TOTAL MILES: 354
One of the rewarding things about the tour is getting to meet, and learn about the players’ personalities and appreciation for the sport of high school football.
At both stops Friday, I truly left feeling that both players — Mid Valley’s Jason Maceyko and West Scranton’s Devin Chollette — are quality kids who do not take the opportunity of playing football for granted.

2019 MID VALLEY SPARTANS
Along the sideline, during his team’s practice session, coach Dave Rebar saw that one of the Spartans who was fighting a sore back stood alone on the opposite side of his teammates. Coach called him over and gave him a bear hug and told him go join his team. The player returned the embrace and jogged out with his teammates. Rebar knows how special being a member of a high school football team is, and how sometimes you can feel left out. He leaves no player out.
What Rebar is trying to build is a family. He has his challenges, just as any coach does. But Rebar genuinely loves his players and he loves the Spartans, a program that is celebrating 50 years. And in case fans have forgotten: Dave Rebar was the catalyst for the greatest seasons in the program’s history.
For that, and coaching with his heart, the community should be thankful.
JASON MACEYKO
MID VALLEY OL
Last season, Maceyko emerged a huge bright spot during an injury-plagued season for the Spartans.
He earned a spot on the Lackawanna Football Conference Division III all-star team at guard, and he is developing into a leader on the field.

2019 WEST SCRANTON INVADERS
On a check of West Scranton’s preseason information sheet, a name quickly jumped out at me. Devin Chollette.
-
I covered his father, Andre Chollette Sr. when he was a standout running back for the Scranton Eagles.
-
I also covered his cousin DeVaughn Chollette who was a punishing tackler for the West Scranton Invaders and an all-conference linebacker at the University of New Hampshire.
-
And I covered his brother, Andre Chollette Jr. when he was a running back for West Scranton.
NOW IT’S DEVIN’S TURN. …
