Tennis fans, we have an abbreviated post for Week 5, and we do apologize. Sometimes, the news cycle requires immediate attention and that’s exactly what happened Thursday with the announcement that legendary Dunmore head football coach Jack Henzes retired after 52 years. We think you would agree, he deserved our full attention.

That nothwithstanding, we were up at the crack of dawn catching up on some tennis paper work, and lo and behold we find that the regular season is nearly complete. That being said, the individual player records are updated to the best of my ability and we admit they are not complete. We had some spotty reporting of scores this season, and the weather forced some postponements and then results were not reported. If there are corrections or errors in YOUR team’s individual records please alert the sports department at sports@timesshamrock.com. We would like to run every player’s updated and accurate singles records in next week’s post.

Let’s get to it:

CONGRATULATIONS, Abington Heights.

The Comets moved their season record to 13-0 with a win Thursday and clinched a tie for the Lackawanna League championship. They can make it totally official Monday when they host West Scranton. Now, what’s even more impressive is that Abington Heights has been without star No. 1 singles player Rory Harris, who is injured. We are wishing him a quick recovery and hope to see him competing in the postseason at 100 percent.

SCRANTON EDGES VALLEY VIEW

SCRANTON — In a match where the momentum kept swinging, Scranton’s doubles team of Maulin Patel-Sneh Desai came through when it mattered for a hard-fought victory.
Urged on by teammates, who had gathered outside the chain link fence at the Scranton High School tennis courts, the No. 2 team earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over Valley View’s Bradley Good-Tony Ferraro to clinch a 3-2 overall victory for the Knights on Monday afternoon in a Lackawanna League battle of top teams.
“I knew it would be hard, but we had a lot of support,” said Sneh Desai, who served out the final four points for the Knights. “I was able to get some serves in.
“I was a little nervous, but I was able to get my serves in at the end.”

TOP TEAMS

The outcomes of last week certainly had an impact on this week’s polls. First, Scranton, which started the week at No. 3, defeated Valley View, which had been at No. 2. Then, Holy Cross, which fell out of the poll, defeated Scranton. That set in motion a unique situation, because earlier in the year, Valley View and Delaware Valley, which held down the No. 5 spot, bith defeated Holy Cross.

So, what does the committe decide?

TOP PLAYERS

The injury to Rory Harris has impacted this week’s rankings. At 100 percent, he certainly would be ranked among the top five players in the Lackawanna League. But in fairness, Harrison Oven of Scranton Prep enters at No. 5 after posting his 10th win of the season last tweek.
