Everyone in the high school sports community is happy to have the opportunity to compete.
That’s true.
But to a coach and the most seasoned athletes, it became clear with the shutdown in December that performance goals had to shift ever so slightly. Without a proper preseason, or should we point out a “normal” preseason, the swimmers and coaches had to adapt their programs to a much different calendar.
Elk Lake coach Jehiel Boner made a very interesting point and observation when we discussed the success his junior superstar Kevin Noldy had been having despite not training with a preseason. …
“The whole team has been doing a lot more dryland and strength training workouts and it is great to see how much strength and muscle they have put on and how that is translating into success in the water.”
Coaches and athletes are seeing improvements. They are turning a negative into a positive. The sport could also be evolving where recovery and a reduction in yardage in the preseason may be the new way to train swimmers. We shall see, but what we know now is this, the record books have not been safe during this winter in the Lackawanna League.
Last week in two dual meets, seven pool records were smashed. Not broken, but smashed.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
Feature
Elk Lake’s Noldy hitting his marks in the pool
A misunderstanding turned into a stroke of good luck for Kevin Noldy.
Interested in taking up swimming in elementary school, club coaches, deceived by his unusual height at his age, put him into the wrong age classification. The novice, despite his advantages in size, struggled against more experienced swimmers, but never let the frustration during and after practice discourage him.
As he improved, and the error corrected, Noldy finished stronger than he started. He faced and conquered that small bit of adversity and turned it into the motivation that drives him to be one of the outstanding competitors in the Lackawanna League.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
WINNING TIMES
Again, we are tracking the winning times in races from dual meets held this week. There has been some confusion. This is not a ranking of best times in the league. That would be a monumental task each week and requires all recorded times from each race, which is extremely time consuming.
NOTE: These are only times from athletes who win races or swim exhibition because their teams don’t compete in the dual meet.
