Pottsville will herald the start of 2020 by raising a Yuengling Lager as a cheer to the new year.

The 6-foot-tall “bottle” will again go up in Garfield Square tonight. Festivities start between 11:15 and 11:30 p.m., with music playing in the square, according to Mayor James T. Muldowney.

The bottle, supplied by the brewery on Mahantongo Street, has the Yuengling logo on a plastic covering around a bottle-shaped mesh cage.

An electronic clock in front of the square Christmas tree will count down to midnight as the bottle is raised.

The bottle raising has been a city tradition since 2003, when Pottsville was preparing to celebrate its bicentennial, the mayor said.

A crew from West End Ladder 6825 will put the bottle on the flagpole at 2:30 p.m. this afternoon, Roads Supervisor Tom Whitaker said.

Prior to the bottle tradition, the Pottsville Jaycees raised a ball on New Year’s Eve. Muldowney said he hopes residents will join him for the celebration.

“Come out and enjoy the festivities,” he said.
