The month of May in Hazleton will feature opportunities to hear poetry and music or take in the beauty of local houses of worship.

The Hazleton Art League will feature “Simultaneous Revolutions: A Spoken Word Performance and Book Release” from 7 to 9 p.m. May 22. G.H. Mosson will read from the new book of poetry and copies will be available.

The event features music by Wordplay. Social distancing is required. A $10 donation is suggested to benefit the Hazleton Soul Kitchen and art league. For more information, call 410-627-8774.

The art league’s monthly acoustic jam will get underway from noon to 2 p.m. on May 23. Participants are asked to bring their own instruments along with copies of the music they’ll be playing. The event is open to 10 participants.

Also May 23, the 2021 Artists Tour of Landmark Churches will be held beginning at 8:30 a.m. from the HUB Welcome Center, 15 W. Broad St., Hazleton. Jan Lokuta will lead the free tour to artists, photographers, teachers, students and anyone interested in art.

Participants will visit Temple Beth Israel, Christ Lutheran Church and Trinity Lutheran Church, all on Church Street.

Lokuta will highlight the variety of styles represented in those downtown houses of prayer. Afterwards, participants will visit the chapel of Holy Dormition in Sybertsville, which features an interior reflecting the traditions of the Byzantine Rite.

Additional downtown events are planned for the summer months, and include a new outdoor Arts in the Park concert series, which will be held in the new CAN DO Community Park at the corner of Broad and Laurel streets.
