Considering meteorologists called for a washout Tuesday, the seventh day of the tour AROUND THE CAMPS went pretty well.

However, what would the annual journey to Wayne County be without a little drama? Two years ago, we filmed Honesdale’s practice in a monsoon and when I arrived at home the video on my phone did not save because of the wet conditions and I had to drive all the way back to retake the footage. Last year, rain again, forced an early practice quit, but we persevered.

This year, as I sat in the parking lot at Wallenpaupack, after avoiding the only down pour of the morning, and put the video highlights from Honesdale together, I turned my key to start the KIA Rio for some air conditioning only to discover I hadn’t turned the car off and the battery had died.

Now what?

I jogged (well, walked briskly) to find the guys from Blue Ridge Cable who parked next to me, hoping they could jump start the car. Fortunately, I had my emergency cables on hand in the trunk, and in only a few minutes time, the engine purred like a kitten.

Then, I visited Wallenpaupack which again has giants on the roster, and finished with Western Wayne.

Overall, a nice summer day.

Onward. …

DAY 7 MILES: 66

TOTAL MILES: 466

OK, quick reminder: Wednesday is the FINAL day of the tour.

2019 HONESDALE HORNETS

It’s always tough to hear the stories of high school athletes who have to miss games because of injuries. High school football games are few and far between. It takes a rare athlete to play more than two varsity seasons, and that usually adds up to about 20-22 games.

In between, there are a lot of workouts in between and when a kid misses most of his season, that’s tough.

But, it is always nice to see an athlete like Jim Ludwig come back from the setback and looking strong for his senior year.

2019 WALLENPAUPACK BUCKHORNS

I am beginning to believe there is something in the lake water in the Wallenpaupack area. For what seems like the 10th straight year when I walked out on the field at the stadium I looked out and felt like I had arrived in the Land of the Giants.

Brandon King is a returning starter. He’s only 6-foot-3, 300 pounds. Zyler Blau, he’s 6-2, 220. Jeremy King, yes Brandon’s brother, he’s a newcomer and young, but he is 6-2, 285. Sam Filip, he’s a freshman who is 6-0, 325. I mean, every season, the Buckhorns are huge up front.

2019 WESTERN WAYNE WILDCATS

Derek Mason is another one of those standout players who overcame adversity. He suffered a broken thumb in Week 1 last year and while the prognosis didn’t seem great, he returned in Week 6 and had a heck of a season.

He is one of several returning starters for the Wildcats who are aiming to return to the District 2 Class 3A playoffs for a third straight season.
