The second day of the District 2 boys basketball tournament almost followed the lead of the winners from Day 1. However, Western Wayne and Lackawanna Trail put some juice to brackets that have otherwise been chalk.

Fifth-seeded Western Wayne had its Big 2 came up big against No. 4 GAR. Zach Rovinsky and Dahlton Frisbie, a pair of 1,000-point scorers in their careers, combined for 51 points in their District 2 Class 4A opener against GAR. They, along with 10 points from freshman Thomas Chernasky, posted a 66-63 win to advance to the semifinals where the Wildcats will get a rematch with defending champion Scranton Prep — More on the Cavaliers later.

 

FOR WESTERN WAYNE: This was the first District 2 win in boys basketball history.

 

Lackawanna Trail also advanced as a No. 5 seed, upsetting No. 4 Mountain View, 56-50, to at least disrupt the top seeds from advancing to the semifinals in Class 2A along with in Class 4A.

 

QUICK HITS

 

• Scranton Prep, the defending Class 4A champion, won its 15th straight District 2 playoff game when it thumped Meyers in the Class 4A tournament. The Cavaliers last loss came in the Class 3A semifinals to Honesdale, 60-54, in 2014.

  GAR and Meyers both lost in the District 2 Class 4A quarterfinals, closing the book on the two proud programs that will join with Coughlin to form Wilkes-Barre Area next season. GAR’s last District 2 championship came in 2003. The Grenadiers won 12 titles in their history. Meyers had a nice recent run, winning three Class 2A championships in five years from 2012 to 2016 and won five district crowns overall.

 

• Western Wayne made the most of its first district playoff opportunity since the PIAA move to six classifications and the implementation of the Power Rating system to qualify. In the Wildcats’ last district appearance, they lost to No. 1 Scranton Prep, 93-31, in 2016. In 2015, Western Wayne lost to Scranton Prep, 96-34, in the first round and it lost to Abington Heights, 85-33, in 2014.

 

• Holy Cross, the defending Class 2A champion, won its seventh straight district playoff game since the PIAA increased to six classifications for the 2016-17 season. The Crusaders have won their postseason matchups in Class 2A by an average of 21.3 points per game.

 

• Lackawanna Trail and Susquehanna swept past Lackawanna Division IV foes to reach the Class 2A semifinals. Susquehanna made the PIAA Class 1A quarterfinals last season, but moved up a class to 2A this season. Lackawanna Trail’s last win in the district playoffs came in 2013 when it also upset an opponent. The Lions were the No. 10 seed when they defeated No. 7 Riverside in the Class 2A opening round. It lost in the quarterfinals to Holy Cross that season and Holy Cross will be their opponent, again, this season.
