I usually have two feelings in August: a desire to savor every last trip for ice cream and every last splash in the pool, and an eagerness to once again have a normal routine. But if I had to choose between the two, I’d definitely favor those days filled with sunscreen, ice pops and bubbles.
Here are my picks for this weekend:
- Head to Tunkhannock for fresh produce and butterflies. Creekside Gardens hosts the Tunkhannock Farmers Market every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. While you’re there, visit the butterfly house to learn about (and feed) beautiful monarchs. We like to get to the market soon after it opens, find something for breakfast and get tickets for the butterfly house. The wait for the butterfly house can get a little long on the weekends, so I recommend getting there early.
- Visit Factoryville for Christy Mathewson Day. Festivities celebrating the life and accomplishments of the baseball legend begin Saturday at 9 a.m. with a free youth football clinic and include a parade at noon, a chicken barbecue at Creekside Park at 1 p.m. and the Keystone Kids Zone at the park starting at 2 p.m.
- Go to the theater. Kiss Theatre Company in Wilkes-Barre will present “Chicago: High School Edition” and the Ritz Playhouse will present “Mary Poppins Jr.” this weekend.
