I binged HBO’s “Euphoria” over the weekend thanks to the glowing recommendation by my assistant editor Kristin. She told me it was an amazing show but the makeup was really the reason why I should watch.
She was 1000% right. I love its accurate portrayal of mental health, addiction and living in the world today. Also, I was super inspired by makeup, fashion, colors, glitter, rhinestones, complex characters and ’00s glamour, plus all the sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll (aka the bangin’ soundtrack thanks to executive producer Drake) that you can want in a teen drama.
I’m also excited because main character Rue (Zendaya) and I have the same birthday (Sept. 14!) and her little sister’s name is Gia. (I might STILL not be able to find a mug or keychain with my name on it at Knoebels but I’ll absolutely take a winter storm and a major TV show character besides Stephanie Tanner’s frenemy on “Full House.”)
A N Y W A Y …
Head makeup artist on “Euphoria,” Doniella Davy is a genius and, unlike every other TV show where a character has a signature look that’s always tame and barely noticeable, the makeup on “Euphoria” furthers the characters’ developments and points to their inner pysches. It’s so fascinating and this interview Davy did for Allure explains this process in detail.
Here’s a little look I threw together Sunday night using Huda Beauty The New Nude eyeshadow palette and Stila Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow in Rose Gold Retro.
I did a super glossy lip using Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Liner in Pillow Talk with Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer in Fu$$y layered over it since the “Euphoria” girls are always rocking texture different textures in their looks.
I skipped liner (which is HARD for me) but Davy said she sometimes skips those finishing touches on certain characters. I also only used a little concealer to spot-treat, instead of my normal full-coverage foundation I typically do if I’m wearing heavy eye makeup. It’s different from what I’m used to but this show makes me want to leave my comfort zone.
