A renovation and repair project at the historic Swetland Homestead in Wyoming began Monday.

The 217-year-old homestead, off Wyoming Avenue, is owned and operated by the Luzerne County Historical Society. It is long overdue for an overhaul, said society interim Executive Director Mary Walsh.

Crews from Panzitta Enterprises Inc. will repair the leaking roof, install new gutters and spouts, and replace deteriorated wood, some of which might be from the original construction in 1803, Walsh said.

Other work will include painting, chimney repairs and window restoration.

The project will be complicated by the need to retain historical accuracy, Walsh said.
