A 17th Dollar General store will open in Schuylkill County in February.

Construction of the new store at 6 Laudemans Lane in Pottsville began in the fall, according to Angela Petkovic, public relations representative for Dollar General Corp.

She said meeting customers’ needs is the top priority when choosing store locations.

“The company looks for places where we can offer customers an easy and convenient shopping choice as we generally serve customers within a 3- to 5-mile radius, or 10-minute drive,” Petkovic said. “We also take competitive factors, traffic patterns and community concerns into consideration.”

The new facility will employ approximately six to 10 people, she said.

A grand opening celebration is tentatively planned for 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, and will include free gift cards and giveaways. A “soft opening” could occur sooner.

The store can be seen just off Route 209 in the West West Terrace area.

Dollar General opened its first location in Schuylkill County in April 1997.

Dollar General offers a range of name-brand and private-brand merchandise, from food, health and beauty products, home cleaning supplies, housewares and stationery to seasonal items and basic clothing.

Dollar General also promotes itself as being “deeply involved in the communities it serves and is an ardent supporter of literacy and education through the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.” The foundation awards grants each year to nonprofit organizations, schools and libraries within a 15-mile radius of a Dollar General store or distribution center to support adult, family, summer and youth literacy programs, Petkovic said.
