The 28th annual Orwigsburg Heritage Day Celebration, which kicks off at 10 a.m. Saturday, is “honoring the past, embracing the future.”

The event, put on by the Orwigsburg Business & Professional Association and held the Saturday after Labor Day each year, will go until 3 p.m.

The event represents many levels of the community, Liz Tuturice, OBPA board member, said.

“It’s basically a community wide event. Many of the churches participate, as well as community organizations and businesses. It will occupy the entire downtown square of Orwigsburg,” she said.

The event boasts an impressive 75 vendors.

“It’s kind of like a block party, but it’s definitely more than that, because we get a ton of outside vendors … ranging from artists to crafters to wineries to distilleries, a food truck. A lot of the local hospitals will come down. … We have horse-drawn carriage rides. That’s offered by Mid Penn Bank. We have a circus performer, a balloon artists, two live bands this year,” she said.

In keeping with the tradition of history and heritage, the Orwigsburg Historical Society, 109 E. Mifflin St., will welcome visitors from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The old jail attached to the society’s headquarters will be open and a jail keeper will share the story of the jail and answer questions.

Other activities at the celebration will include a dunk tank, a bounce house, games, blacksmith demonstrations, a 50/50 raffle and crafts. Orwigsburg T-shirts will also be on sale.

Other events on the schedule include:

  • Salem United Methodist Church will serve its “famous” pancake and sausage breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m.
  • Music by Rhythm and Brews, 9:30 a.m. to noon.
  • Circus performer Madeleine Bell, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
