The Greater Scranton YMCA plans to offer scholarships for swimming and water safety instruction to children from underserved communities.
Drowning is the second leading cause of injury death for children ages 1 to 14, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A study from USA Swimming notes the youth drowning rate is two to three times higher than the national average in ethnically diverse communities.
To maintain a safe environment with COVID-19, the Y will offer smaller class sizes and require all staff and volunteers to wear masks. The Y is also using hydrostatic foggers throughout the building for disinfection.
