For many NEPA children, this will be the last official weekend of summer before school resumes next week. Make the most of it by enjoying a weekend of family-friendly activities.

  • Be a spectator (or a participant) in the Electric City Classic bicycle race in downtown Scranton. On Saturday, the event downtown includes a kids race, and later in the afternoon, the fastest racers of the weekend will be circling downtown city blocks.  Spectators are encouraged to bring cowbells and make some noise. On Sunday, the racers will pedal up one of the steepest streets in the city’s Hill Section during a hill climb.
  • Attend the free “Back to School Bonanza” for children from 3 to 12 years of age and their families on Sunday from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Marketplace at Steamtown. The event will include hands-on educational activities, music, games, face-painting, crafts, refreshments and prizes. Twenty family-oriented activities will be provided by community organizations and university faculty, staff and students, including several with a STEM theme, such as Neuroscience for Kids and Microscopic Exploration. For more information, call 570-941-4419 or email community@scranton.edu.
  • Enjoy the the annual Wally Lake Fest. Events, which begin Friday and run through Sunday, include live music, art and children’s activities.
