It’s been almost a full year since the last time Crestwood and Scranton Prep battled for a District 2 Class 2A Championship.

On Friday, the Comets, who went undefeated in the regular season to capture the Wyoming Valley Conference title, will host Scranton Prep in a rematch.

Hinton, Reihner spark Prep past Crestwood

 

 

Scranton Prep recovered from a slow start and avenged a loss to Crestwood, 12-11, on Wednesday to take a lead in the Wyoming Valley Conference Division I standings.
The Cavaliers finished the regular-season 11-2.
Crestwood, which beat Scranton Prep, 14-7, earlier this season, and had three straight wins in the series, fell to 10-2 and needs a win over North Pocono (6-6) on Friday to clinch a tie for first and force a playoff for the championship.
“This is huge,” Scranton Prep’s Daniel Hinton said. “They have had our number a little bit lately. We put a really good game together and that is big as we get ready for the playoffs.
“I think we treated it as a regular game and started off a little slow, but picked things up pretty quick in the second quarter and from there on.”
It was a big night for Hinton, who scored three goals and had two assists to give him 100 points this season, setting a record for the program that started in 2013.
Goalie Kyle Reihner also set a Scranton Prep record by stopping 19 shots.
“Ever since they beat us, even though you take it one game at a time, we have been looking forward to this one,” Reihner said. “It’s cool to have a game like that, but really this was a great team effort.”
Greg Fisher, who missed most of the season with a concussion suffered in the first match against Delaware Valley, had five goals to lead the Cavaliers. Luke Johnson added two and Joe Pettinato had a goal and five assists.
Anthony Caporuscio had six goals to lead Crestwood.

WRIGHT TWP. — By the time the final whistle signaled Crestwood’s latest District 2 Class 2A championship, goaltender Reed Karaska was already buried underneath a few of his Comets teammates in celebration.
He earned it over the prior 48 minutes.
In what Crestwood coach Brian Zabroski called his best performance of the season, Karaska was stellar in the cage with 20 saves and helped the Comets pull away to a lead. The offense did the rest, with five players recording three or more goals in the Comets’ 21-8 romp over Scranton Prep on Thursday at Crestwood Comets Stadium.
It is Crestwood’s second straight district title, and the Comets will open the state playoffs on Tuesday at a time and place to be determined.
The Crestwood defense made for a balanced team effort on Thursday, hounding Prep on the ride in transition and limiting the shooting space of its most dangerous attackers.
“They’ve got some big threats on the top,” Zabroski said. “Daniel Hinton, Greg Fisher, Luke Johnson, those guys can shoot like nobody else we’ve seen. Our goal the past couple days has really been to get our defense up to speed to meet those guys, because they’ve taken it to us for three games this season.”

SCRANTON — It hit like a tidal wave.
Crestwood peppered Scranton Prep with a flurry of attacks on goal and found the back of the cage 10 times during a clinching run in a matchup of two top boys lacrosse teams in the Wyoming Valley Conference on Wednesday afternoon.
The Comets rolled from there to a convincing 19-8 victory at the Loyola Complex in a rematch of last season’s District 2 Class 2A final. Crestwood (12-4, 12-0 WVC) secured its perfect conference season and second straight title.
“The biggest key for us was confidence,” said Crestwood’s Anthony Caporuscio, who was one of three teammates with five goals.
“We all believed we were the better team. We played with a lot of heart and once we got rolling, they couldn’t stop us.”
Scranton Prep (10-4, 9-2), which honored its seniors before the start of the game, started the long awaited return match against the Comets with a high level of energy.
Greg Fisher got the Cavaliers going in the right direction with a flick of the wrist and a quick goal early in the first quarter.
“All season we have been working to get to this game,” Scranton Prep coach Mark Kozlowski said. “The team energy was really up. We were ready and came out firing.
“Then, we got punched in the mouth a little bit and first, the gravity of the game stunned the guys, and second, we are a young team and we have to take this as a learning experience.”
