HS BASKETBALL: Season is spinning its tires; Comets still strong

Ok, this isn’t fun at all.

Mother Nature put an almost complete halt to the Lackawanna League regular season in boys basketball this week, interrupting the schedule and the Coaches vs. Cancer activities across the region.

Snow and ice, and frigid temperatures, proved to be too much for athletic directors to battle against, leaving them desperate to replay the games that were forced on hold this week.

On Friday, the league will attempt to get back to some semblance of normalcy when it is back on track with a bear-full slate of games.

INSIDE DIVISION I

 

 

Well, the league is behind on games in Division I to say the least.

Abington Heights did get its Coaches vs. Cancer game in against Valley View on Wednesday night. It was a nice scene to start the game as both teams, coaching staffs and cheerleading squads got together for a group photo at center court with their blue CvC T-shirts.

S. ABINGTON TWP. — Each time Abington Heights needed a little fire, one of its veteran standouts provided the spark to get it started.
George Tinsley scored 17 points, Jack Nealon scored 16 and Trey Koehler added 14 to fuel the balanced attack for the top-ranked Comets, who withstood a torrid shooting night from Valley View’s Marc Kudrich in a 60-53 win Wednesday in a Lackawanna League Division I boys basketball game.
“I knew coming into this game, we had a couple of days off with the snow, and the energy was a little bit lower than it has been, and they got us a few times with some runs,” said Tinsley, who also had five rebounds and three blocked shots. “We showed moments here and there and they had some momentum.
“We had to do well coming out of timeouts and get back to being ourselves to make those key runs.”
Abington Heights (13-2 overall, 7-0 in Division I) had a 24-23 lead at the half and used runs of 7-0 and 9-0 in the third quarter to provide enough cushion to keep the cagey Cougars, who are ranked seventh, at bay.
For the first surge, Jack Nealon swished his third of four 3-pointers in the game and Koehler scored four straight as the Comets built a 33-25 lead to force a timeout from Valley View.
“I feel like I am getting into a little rhythm,” said Jack Nealon, who has made 11 from beyond the 3-point line in his last three games. “My teammates did a really nice job of getting me open, setting screens and drawing defenders.
“I just have to make the shots.”

COACHES VS. CANCER WEEK

 

Now, with the weather impacting the schedule, teams are scrambling to make up for their lost dates during Coaches vs. Cancer Week.

Scranton Prep is still working toward having its day as a doubleheader with the girls program. Athletic director Scott Gower is still ironing out some of the logistics.

On Friday, other schools will also be hosting their event. Again, if you can, help donate to the cause as this is a major fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

INSIDE DIVISION II

 

 

Well, it would be nice to review what happened this week in Division II, but there hasn’t been a game played.

Things will start to heat up, or at the very least, get more interesting once these teams start playing head-to-head again in the second half of their regular season.

However, Friday, four of the five teams will be in action against Division I opponents.

These crossover games, which do count in the Lackawanna League standings, haven’t been kind to the Division II teams this season.

INSIDE DIVISION III

 

 

There were two games played and they were intense rivalry battles in Division III.

First, Holy Cross went up 2-0 in the season series against borough rival Dunmore. The Crusaders defeated Dunmore, 58-35.

HOLY CROSS DEFEATS DUNMORE

Tyler Mozeleski had 14 points to lead four players in double figures for Holy Cross as the sixth-ranked Crusaders beat No. 10 Dunmore in a Lackawanna League Division III matchup.
Leahy O’Connor and Caleb Callejas each scored 11 points, while Kieran Burrier added 10.
Daniel Walsh led Dunmore with 10 points.

 

 

Earlier this season, Holy Cross beat the Bucks, 73-66, in two overtimes at the Lynett Memorial Basketball Tournament.

 

 

 

 

In the other rivalry game, Riverside outlasted Old Forge, 47-39. in a Coaches vs. Cancer game.

 

 

Riverside defeats Old Forge

Michael Rickert scored 20 points and Michael Antoniacci scored eight of his 10 in the third quarter to lead the Vikings past rival Old Forge.
Brandon Reed contributed 11 for Riverside.
Michael DiGregorio scored 16 and Dante Lucarelli had 15 to pace Old Forge.
