HS BASKETBALL: Brrrrrr! Winter impacts schedule; Coaches vs. Cancer Week is here

 

It’s the start of another week of high school basketball in NEPA and already the Arctic Blast that sent the area into the deep freeze has impacted Tuesday’s Lackawanna League schedule.

 

North Pocono at Honesdale and Forest City at Susquehanna have already been postponed until Wednesday.

 

Wallenpaupack at West Scranton will be Feb. 2 with a 3 p.m. JV start.

INSIDE DIVISION I

 

 

Abington Heights continued full-steam ahead after its win over Scranton Prep in the annual showdown between the top two teams in the division. The Comets defeated Honesdale, which is a contender in Division II.

The Comets have won 16 straight in Division I. Their last loss came against Scranton Prep on Jan. 19, 2018.

Also in Division I, Scranton Prep rebounded from its loss to the Comets by winning a thrilling game against Valley View.

In that game, Valley View’s Marc Kudrich cleared the 1,000-point mark for his career.

 

 

 

 

COACHES VS. CANCER WEEK

 

This is Coaches vs. Cancer Suits & Sneakers Week in District 2.

Scranton Prep head coach Andrew Kettel has been at the forefront of the fundraising initiative that started 11 years ago. This year there will be a special doubleheader at the Xavier Center on Thursday when Wallenpaupack visits Scranton Prep.

INSIDE DIVISION II

 

 

Wallenpaupack regained the division lead with an impressive win over Scranton on Friday night in a Division I-II crossover game. Honesdale, meanwhile, fell to top-ranked Abington Heights sending it to 3-3.

 

Like in Division I, there was reason to celebrate in the division. Western Wayne’s Dahlton Frisbie scored the 1,000th point of his career.

 

His teammate Zach Rovinsky will be joining him soon, as well.

INSIDE DIVISION III

 

 

Mid Valley and Holy Cross had their annual showdown Friday night. The Spartans used a late rally to turn back the Crusaders, 48-45. They got a terrific effort from Colin Hazelton, who is still working his way back from a foot injury. Shane Rosencrans scored a key basket in the fourth quarter and Tyler O’Connor willed a free throw through the net in a wild fourth quarter.

 

 

Hazelton helps Mid Valley hold off rival Holy Cross

THROOP — Colin Hazelton needed a moment to catch his breath and collect himself after jogging into the hallway, heading toward the locker room.
His Mid Valley teammates waited patiently.
With the little bit of energy he could conjure, the senior joined them for a loud celebration.
Hazelton had just seven points, but collected four rebounds and created offense with six steals as the third-ranked Spartans beat rival Holy Cross, 48-45, on Friday night in the latest showdown between the Lackawanna League Division III powers.
Mid Valley (11-2 overall, 5-1 division) has a half-game lead over No. 5 Holy Cross (9-5, 4-1) in the division.
It was a while since Hazelton clocked that many intense minutes, continuing his road back from a preseason injury.
“I’m exhausted,” Hazelton said. “This is all about the seniors working so hard every day in practice and coach (Mike) Abda always pushing us. 
“Holy Cross is a really, really good team and we just knew we had to go after it if we wanted to win it.”

Mountain View remained undefeated with its win over Forest City, and Susquehanna remained a game back after its win over Lackawanna Trail on Friday.

Mikey Schermerhorn has emerged as the top player in the division. He leads in all three statistical categories in Division IV.
