We’re midway through the summer but there’s still plenty for the family to do before the kiddies go back to school and the weather turns cooler.
Lunch at the Library takes place weekdays at noon at the Pottsville Free Public Library. Blocks, LEGOs, games, crafts and other activities will be available. For children age 5 to 17, but younger children are welcomed. Register at least one day in advance to ensure an accurate lunch count by calling 570-622-8880 or email potchild@pottsvillelibrary.org.
Children ages 5 to 11 are invited to Family Night at the Pottsville Free Public Library at 6 p.m. Thursdays. There will be a special activity or guest and children who participate will also have the opportunity to take home prizes. Younger siblings are welcomed. Save the date. Farm to Square will be held at 5 p.m. Aug. 8 at Orwigsburg Town Square. There will be live music by Radio Active Munsters, food trucks, local artisans, wineries and distilleries, farmers, balloon animals, kids’ activities and more.
Pawcasso, an art experience for your dog, is scheduled for 10 a.m. Aug. 3 at the Walk in Art Center. Take your dog to create their own masterpiece. Dogs must be leashed and with their owner at all times. Cost is a donation to the local SPCA and other offerings to the shelter are greatly appreciated. Space is limited on a first-come basis. The Penn State Master Gardeners will host its third annual Garden Gathering at 10 a.m. Aug. 17 at the Demonstration Garden on the grounds of First United Church of Christ in Schuylkill Haven. Cut flowers, perennials, fresh produce, baked goods, art and food will be available.
Mark your calendars. The 21st Annual Heritage Day and the 20th annual Parade of Nations is slated to take place in downtown Shenandoah on Aug. 24. The parade, starting at 10 a.m., will feature representatives in full ceremonial dress, live music and marching bands and more. Following the parade, taste the foods of many nations and crafts will be available for purchase.
Literacy tutors
- Responsibility: Help adults with English as a Second Language, reading skills or GED preparation. Your assistance can help someone gain employment skills or get a better job and have a higher quality of life for themselves and their family.
- Times: Requires a commitment of three hours per week.
- Skills: For volunteers age 55 and older. Bachelor’s degree and background checks required. Training and ongoing support provided.
