The weekend’s frigid temperatures might have kept a lot of people indoors, but the weather was perfect for those at Hillside Park in South Abington Twp.
After a hiatus last winter, the park welcomed back ice skaters on Eston Wilson Lake starting Jan. 9. Last year, the lake didn’t open for the popular activity. Mild temperatures prevented the ice from reaching the desired thickness for safe skating.
But that generally hasn’t been the case this winter — although skating was suspended part of last week because the weather was uncooperative.
Sunday’s high was 29 degrees, and the mercury was expected to dip into the teens overnight, according to AccuWeather. The forecast calls for 1 to 3 inches of snow on Tuesday.
Everyone at Hillside Park is required to wear a face mask at all times because of the COVID-19 pandemic, whether they’re skating or not.
Volunteers will continue keeping tabs on the ice thickness this season, clearing snow when necessary and resurfacing it.
