HS SWIMMING: Les Richards Meet starts with Diving; Races on Saturday

The Lackawanna League swimming regular season had a fantastic finish as Scranton Prep girls captured the championship with a win over Delaware Valley in a battle of undefeated teams and the Delaware Valley boys completed yet another undefeated season.

Classics undefeated again

SCRANTON — Peyton McNulty picked up her pace on every stroke driving toward the wall during a frantic final 25 yards.
When she touched, the reigning Times-Tribune Swimmer of the Year glanced to her right, where teammate Alison Prushinski had just popped out from the water and glared back at her.
They both then looked at the clock and celebrated their finish.
Scranton Prep’s two standouts placed first and second in the 100-yard freestyle and gave their team a charge of energy on its way to a convincing win in the most important girls dual meet in the Lackawanna League.
Led by a loaded stable of All-Region talent that includes McNulty and Prushinski, the Classics powered to a 97-73 win over Delaware Valley on Thursday at the Byron Complex on the University of Scranton campus to wrap up a third straight undefeated championship season.
“It was a huge meet and we are all excited that we won,” McNulty said. “It’s my third year being league champion and it’s amazing and we have an amazing team.
“We all swam to the level that we can and I think we are going to have a great season going into March with all of our championship meets.”

Following the outstanding final meets of the regular season, the best of the best will put their talents on display at the annual Les Richards Championships. Competition starts with diving tonight at 5:30 p.m. at Scranton High School where Abington Heights has returning champion, Camille Marquardt in the girls event and last year’s boys runner-up and District 2 Class 3A champion Carter Smith.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Then, the swimming championships will take place Saturday. Preliminary races start in the morning and the finals will be held at 6 p.m. at Scranton High School.
