The Scott Twp. community is cooking up a special project.

A committee wants residents and others with ties to the municipality to submit recipes for a community cookbook in celebration of the township’s 175th anniversary this year.

Through Aug. 15, a variety of recipes — from main entrees to desserts to pet treats — can be dropped off in a box marked “recipes” at the Scott Twp. Building or emailed to nadiana329@icloud.com with “cookbook” in the subject line.

Nicole Diana, a lifetime Scott Twp. resident and committee co-chairwoman, came across a similar collaborative cookbook from the township’s 150th anniversary in 1996. She posted photos of it in a Facebook group for Scott Twp. residents, prompting a conversation about creating a new one.

The small group of residents gets together every few weeks to discuss the cookbook. They have at least 25 recipes so far, and proceeds from cookbook sales will go toward beautifying the Scott Twp. Municipal Park, Diana said.

“It’s nice to get the community together to put this cookbook together,” she said. “I learned a lot by doing this, and I think it’s awesome that we are going to benefit our park.”

Chris Fron Lubash, an aunt of Diana’s fiancé, John Fron, served as a co-chairwoman for the 1996 cookbook, and now she’s helping with the 2021 edition.

“It seems like it’s getting passed down through the family,” Diana said.

Lubash said she’s amazed to see people still interested in cookbooks, because they’re becoming obsolete with the ease of finding recipes online.

For the 1996 cookbook, co-chairwoman Tina Selvenis and her husband, Dave, typed up most of the recipes, Lubash said, adding that not everyone owned a computer back then.

The new cookbook will include recipes in remembrance of Lubash’s mother, Catherine Fron. She said she hopes others will submit family recipes to honor their loved ones.

“I want her legacy to live on,” Lubash said.

The committee received approval from the Scott Twp. Board of Supervisors, but it isn’t a township project. Supervisor Steven Russell serves as committee co-chairman, but as a resident only.

Russell said he saw Diana’s post on Facebook and thought a new cookbook would be the perfect way to celebrate the township’s 175th anniversary.

He hopes the project creates a sense of community, history and nostalgia.

“I love to cook as well and I love a good cookbook,” Russell said. “I thought it was a great way to bring the community together, which is always important to me.”

Local businesses may still place advertisements in the book. For information, email Russell at srussell@scotttwp.org.

He added that along with submitting recipes, cooks who want to make a small donation under $25 will receive honorable mention in the book.

Donation checks can be made payable to Scott Twp. with “cookbook” in the memo and dropped off or mailed to the township building at 1038 Montdale Road, Scott Twp., PA 18447.
