With Memorial Day thought of as the first unofficial day of summer, the manager of Cedar Street Supply in Hazleton said now is a good time to take on outdoor projects.

With people having more time at home, around-the-house shortcomings are more noticed, and do-it-yourself projects are moving up the priority list.

“This time of year, landscaping is always a no-brainer,” manager Lynn Huff said. “We carry mulch, sand and stone. And of course all the tools you need, like hoses and stuff.”

Many of the customers Huff has seen over the past week or so seem to be working on outdoor projects. He wondered if it was the time of year — or that they’re itching to spend time outdoors due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“A lot of people are starting to think about getting their swimming pools ready,” Huff said of a project sometimes left for after the end of the school year, depending on Northeast Pennsylvania weather.

And if they’re thinking about adding a pool to their yard — even if it’s a small inflatable one — Huff said Cedar Street Supply can deliver pool sand.

“If they want to tackle a project like that, we have the pool sand that goes underneath the swimming pool,” he noted.

Huff said many people are looking forward to outdoor grilling and picnics, despite restrictions on large gatherings that will likely keep some traditional events from taking place.

Customers have been visiting stores throughout the region to have their propane tanks filled in time for Memorial Day.

“Or if they’re thinking of doing anything inside the house, we carry all kinds of repair products. Like if it involves plumbing, we carry everything for plumbing and heating,” Huff said.

Of course, both neighborhood and big-box home improvement stores are an option for items such as cleaning supplies, gloves, masks and hand sanitizer, too.
