Kick off the new year by joining one of the “First Day” hikes scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 1, starting at 9 a.m. at Lackawanna State Park, 1839 Abington Road, North Abington Twp.
The morning starts with an “early bird hike” into the Quarry Ridge Preserve and along the southern border of the park. Participants are asked to meet at the South Shore Boat Launch for the 2.5-mile loop that has rough terrain and inclines.
Then, there is a kids’ First Day hike at 1 p.m. on the Pine Trail. Those participants are asked to meet at the Faschings Parking Area at the end of the South Shore access road.
Lastly, hikers can join “Just a Walk in the Park” at 2 p.m. They should meet at the Warming Hut next to Lot No. 1.

‘All Creatures Great and Small’ Sneak Preview
WVIA presents a free sneak preview of season two of “All Creatures Great and Small” on Sunday, Jan. 2, at the Dietrich Theater, 60 E. Tioga St., Tunkhannock.
