For the second consecutive year, St. Ubaldo Day is canceled.

The St. Ubaldo Society announced Friday that the annual La Festa dei Ceri will not take place in 2021 due to the ongoing pandemic.

Originally scheduled for May 29, the Race of the Saints normally draws thousands to the borough to watch teams of runners, known as ceraioli, carry 400-pound statues through town. The society canceled the event for the safety of the runners, participants and the community, according to the announcement.

La Festa dei Ceri dates back to the 12th century in Gubbio, Italy. Jessup started its own tradition in 1909.

The society will hold a virtual celebration this year and plans to release a schedule of events in the coming weeks. Visit saintubaldosociety.org or the society’s Facebook page for updates.
