Sales of a piece of local football history will help the Greater Hazleton Historical Society preserve items from the area’s past in its museum.
The society will sell undamaged copies of a poster advertising the UNICO Football Classic between all-stars from Greater Hazleton and Panther Valley on Aug. 4, 1961.
Posters cost $10, and people can buy them when the museum is open on Sunday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. For more information, telephone the society’s president, Tom Gabos, at 570-579-7976.
Each poster shows a punter against a yellow and white backdrop. Black letters advertise the game, and there’s a red and white emblem advertising Coca-Cola.
The game drew 4,000 fans to Harman-Geist Stadium.
Even after three decades as a reporter at the Standard-Speaker, Kent Jackson still enjoys meeting people, learning more about the community and sharing stories with readers. He currently covers schools but has reported on local government, health, police and the environment. Regularly, he writes about outdoor sports, wildlife and conservation for the Wildlife page on Sundays. Contact: 570-455-3636; firstname.lastname@example.org
