Mother Maria Kaupas

Kaupas, a native of Lithuania, is the foundress of the Sisters of Saint Casimir.

Her first mission, in 1908, was the opening of Holy Cross Parish School in Mount Carmel, where she and two companion sisters taught children of Lithuanian immigrants.

Kaupas’ life and work have been the inspiration for the founding and continued operation of the Mother Maria Kaupas Center, a ministry of Divine Redeemer Parish in Mount Carmel.

Her mission at Holy Cross and the founding of the Kaupas Center in 2015, 75 years after her death, are included in the documentary.

The Sisters of Saint Casimir also served Catholic parishes in the Schuylkill County communities of Minersville, New Philadelphia and Shenandoah.
