The next full moon, the final full moon of 2020 — the Full Long Nights Moon — will peak at 10:28 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29.

Coming on one of the longest nights of the year, it will show above the horizon for a relatively long period of the night.

Some Native Americans knew the full moon of December as the Full Long Nights Moon, recognizing the long periods of night relative to daylight at this time of year, around the winter solstice on Saturday, Dec. 21.

Another Native American name for the upcoming full moon was Full Cold Moon, an appropriate description for this time of year, when temperatures are falling. And some knew it as the Full Snow Moon for equally obvious reasons.

It will be the last full moon on this year. The first full moon of 2021 will be Thursday, Jan. 28.
