Among the acres of stately forests blanketing the mountains of Pennsylvania are many hidden treasures. Some are gifts of nature and others are human-made creative endeavors. Many such gifts are in Schuylkill County in our own backyards, so to speak, and yet so many people have not heard of them or visited them.
One such gem is the Arts Barn Art and Education Center, Schuylkill Haven. The Arts Barn is a nonprofit 501©(3) art education venue and full art gallery featuring more than 150 Pennsylvania artists. The center offers classes for all ages and abilities, workshops, exhibitions and children’s summer art and nature camps in our beautiful Schuylkill County setting. The multipurpose space is also available to be rented for meetings and gatherings.
Pre-pandemic, The Arts Barn and volunteers held Art Outreach projects in local long-term care facilities, senior centers and community events. When these projects resume, volunteers are welcome to help at such events, including students seeking community service hours for school or service projects.
Participating in past area festivals, The Arts Barn provides the opportunity to create your own art, browse and purchase unique art from area artists. Although this year such events have been canceled, keep your eyes open for future events.
The Arts Barn itself holds an annual Fall Festival which has been canceled this year due to COVID-19. This festival generally offers a family-friendly environment to celebrate the changing seasons, replete with horses, face-painting, wine tasting and an opportunity to watch talented craftsmen and artists display and demonstrate their wares. So look for it in fall 2021.
Each spring, The Arts Barn holds a collaborative art fundraiser and auction, where Pennsylvania artists are invited to participate by creating artwork in conjunction with one or more artists. This fundraiser features live, silent and chance auctions, food, music, art, wine and gift baskets.
Small classes are still being planned this fall as well as an expanded Holiday Décor Auction. The Arts Barn has also begun a monthly online auction on its Facebook page.
Remaining open with reduced hours at this time — 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through Sunday — The Arts Barn is a treasure you might want to explore.
